rue gives back

Mission Statement:

rue21 isn’t just about looking good—we also want to do good by partnering with charitable organizations that fit our style and culture. rueGIVESback is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of our customers and Associates in the rueCommunities where they live, work, shop and play.

Our Associates and customers are motivated by their passion for bettering the world, and rue21 wants to succeed in our commitment to philanthropy. rue21 supports organizations throughout the nation through the rueGIVESback program. We are always seeking ways to partner with charitable organizations in our rueCommunities, using our position as a prominent retailer to create a positive impact.

rueRelief:

As part of rueGIVESback, we want to give back to our Associates and their families. rueRelief has been established to provide a donation of merchandise from the SIM Store to those Associates who experience a personal or financial hardship due to a catastrophic event or emergency situation beyond their control. The kinds of donations include clothing of all types, Tarea sleepwear, bras, undies, shoes, boots, socks, coats, jean jackets and hoodies. Gift card donations for an Associate may be available in special circumstances.

rue21 is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of our Associates and their families, and rueRelief has already succeeded in providing clothing to 13 Associates in need.

Imprueve:

Rue21’s Associates are extremely involved in the community, having donated over $11,000 to organizations such as Toys for Tots, Angel Tree Salvation Army, and American Heart Association Heart Walk. Our Associates participate in many fundraising events, including Tough Mudder, Fight for Air Climb, Komen Walk, and Cranberry Cup Baseball.

rue21 is a proud, annual supporter of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, collecting hundreds of new toys for less privileged children in our community. We also work with our Teen Board in community-based initiatives, including raising money for the National Wildlife Association and assisting with a food drive for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

A new initiative for rue21 and its Teen Board is raising donations for Beverly’s Birthdays, an organization that provides birthday celebrations for youth living in shelters in the Pittsburgh region. The Teen Board works in their individual schools and communities to collect items needed for the group’s celebrations, such as small toys, candy, party hats and the like; rue21 matches the Teen Board’s accumulated donations with its own collection from the corporate office.

rueGIVESback:

rueGivesBack

rue21 sponsors and donates to various non-profit organizations that empower and enrich the lives of underprivileged young girls and guys. We give monetary donations to non-profit organizations to support a particular cause or fundraising event, and we donate merchandise to support a need in the community, a particular catastrophic event, or natural disaster. We also provide raffle baskets for local fundraising events.

rue21 has given over $33,000 in cash donations to organizations such as American Heart Association Heart Walk, A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, Cranberry Cup, Children’s Hospital, Kids Wish Network and Make-A-Wish Foundation. We have also given over $2 million, plus merchandise donations, to the Missing Persons Foundation.

Breast Cancer Awareness month is an important month here at rue21. Currently, there are more than 250,000 women in the U.S. under 40 living with breast cancer. Thanks to our partnership with A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, rue21 hosted a campaign in stores called “Big or Small, Let’s Save Them All.” In 2013, rue21 was the top sponsor for the Pitch for Hope baseball clinic, which raised over $50,000 for Glimmer.

Merchandise donations are a large part of our contributions to the community. We donate to organizations such as the MPF Foundation, Robert Half Suit Drive, Accessories for PGH ELM, National Council of Jewish Women, State of WA Wild Fires, 22 Quties Special Needs Beauty Pageant, Angel Bins Recycling, Dress for Success and, as per Associate requests, the NY Women’s Shelter, Honduras Mission Trip and the Pittsburgh Women’s Shelter.

rue21 is also excited to be partnering with Threads for Teens, a project that looks to outfit deserving young girls who are in foster care or extreme poverty situations in two brand new head-to-toe outfits. Our commitment to this project is expanding from donations of merchandise to the Title Sponsorship of the Threads for Teens 2015 Summer Tour, which takes place in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Antonio, Nashville, Atlanta, and New York. Around 100-150 girls are invited in each city, where there will be a conference held to empower and educate the girls. The conferences include a Women in the Media Interactive workshop, Dress for Success workshop, Goal Setting workshop, Hair/Makeup Session by Morrocan Oil, Bra Fitting by Victoria Secret and Fashion Styling in the Mobile Boutique.

Sustainability:

rue21 gives back to the environment as well. We believe that by reducing our environmental impact we can offer a better product for our customers. The focus in our stores, Support Center and Distribution Center, is to reduce energy consumption, encourage recycling, and challenge our associates and customers to think globally and act locally.

Our recent sustainability initiatives include:

• Store Construction: Our new store construction standards include energy-saving LED light bulbs in signage and in interior track lighting, and high-efficiency fluorescent lighting for all other light standards.

• Distribution Center: Our distribution center mandates the recycling of cardboard, paper and wooden pallets in order to keep recyclable materials out of our nation’s landfills. Ongoing capital improvements to our distribution center in Weirton, West Virginia continue to reduce rue21's energy consumption and carbon footprint.

• Logistics Partners: We constantly work with our logistics partners to evaluate and adopt the latest energy-saving technologies and methods to bring our merchandise to rue21 stores across the continental U.S. Saving energy allows us to pass savings on to rue21 customers.

• Corporate headquarters: Every day is Earth Day at rue21. Mandatory paper recycling and energy-saving building enhancements lower costs and reduce our carbon footprint so we can bring better value to rue21 customers.
